A missed poll is not proof the poll was written

Horse-race surveys miss. The stronger claim says the miss was the product, not the sample.

Polls miss. They miss by sampling people who answer phones, by weighting on a past electorate, and by asking a horse-race question weeks before anyone has finished deciding. A miss is ordinary. The claim filed here is the stronger one: that major public polls are routinely fabricated, and that the published number is a narrative rather than a measurement.

Fabrication would leave artifacts. A written questionnaire that was never fielded, a weighting memo that invents respondents, or two crosstabs that cannot come from the same sample. What the X lane usually offers instead is the gap between a poll and a later result, treated as a confession.

Public pollsters release methods, sample sizes, and dates. Those releases are incomplete in familiar ways: low response rates, modeled likely voters, and sponsors with a preference. Incomplete method is a reason to widen the error bar. It is not, by itself, evidence that the interviews were never done.

The file changes if a methods log, a leaked instrument, or a replicated audit shows invented respondents. A miss on election night does not do that work alone.

Information on file

Desk notes are appended as the lane changes. They sit under the claim so a mark can follow the file, not the first draft.

  1. Desk note

Separated a miss from a fabrication

Today's posts still use the word fake for any survey that disagreed with the final result. The file keeps those as misses unless someone produces the instrument or the respondent file.

  2. Desk note

Methods lane is more useful than the victory laps

The methodology search has the only posts that name a sample size or a date. The desk will prefer that lane when it revises the claim.
