The assumption that a viral clip is fake until proven filmed
Synthetic video is real and getting cheaper. The claim says it already accounts for most of what people share.

Synthetic video is no longer a demo. A short clip of a public figure saying a sentence they did not say can be made, and the tools keep getting cheaper. That fact is settled enough to change how a newsroom handles video. It is not the same fact as the claim filed here.
The claim says most widely shared political clips are deepfakes, not real footage wearing a bad caption. Those are different failures. A real clip with a false description is an old problem. A generated clip is a new one. The X lane collapses them. Anything surprising is called a deepfake, often before anyone has looked at the frames.
The useful test is boring. Find the longer recording, the other camera angle, the posting time, the account that uploaded it first. Generated video fails some of those checks and passes others, which is why a hunch is not a finding. Public forensic write-ups still show a mix: some viral clips are synthetic, and many are ordinary video with a caption doing the lying.
This file moves when a count exists — a reviewed set of widely shared political clips, with a rate that is actually above half. Until there is a count, 'most' is a mood about the feed.
Information on file
Desk notes are appended as the lane changes. They sit under the claim so a mark can follow the file, not the first draft.
Desk note
Three viral clips today, one of them generated
Of the three clips dominating the lane this morning, one has a credible synthetic tell and two trace back to longer real recordings with false captions. One morning is not a rate. It is a reason not to treat the rate as settled.
Desk note
Kept captions and fabrications in separate piles
The claim is about fabricated pictures, not about dishonest sentences written over real ones. The file will keep saying so, because the lane will not.
